Having P.I.N.S. - Post-Treatment Instructions
What are the post-treatment instructions?There may be some local bruising or skin irritation at the insertion site. If soreness from the therapy occurs patients are encouraged to use an ice pack over the area for twenty minutes per hour from one to four times daily. Anti-inflammatories should be avoided for at least 12 hours after each treatment, and only taken if absolutely needed during the course of PINS. These include aspirin, ibuprofen (motrin, advil), naproxen (aleve, naprosyn), diclofenac (voltaren), celecoxib (celebrex), meloxicam (mobic), ketoprofen (orudis), indomethacin (indocin), oxaprozin (daypro), piroxicam (feldene), rofecoxib (vioxx), sulindac (clinoril), tolmetin sodium (tolectin), valdecoxib (bextra), and excedrin. Acetaminophen (tylenol) may be taken without compromising PINS. Other prescription drugs that do not compromise PINS are those that combine acetaminophen with hydrocodone (norco, vicodin, lorcet, lortab). Prescription narcotics do not affect PINS. codeine, fentanyl (patch), hydromorphine (dilaudid), hydrocodone (vicodin), meperidine (demerol), oxycodone (percoset, percodan, oxycontin), and tramadol (ultram). Darvon and Darvocet have been banned by the FDA since 2010 due to heart disease side effects. Analgesic drugs that modulate brain neurotransmitter activity do not affect PINS. This includes gabapentin (neurontin), andpregabalin (lyrica).
